China Slowdown

Hong Kong Tatler - - Life -

A decline in the China market is being blamed for an 8 per cent decrease in sales of Bordeaux wines, to 685 million bottles in 2014. According to the bureau that represents the region’s producers, the CIVB, sales to China shrank almost 20 per cent in 2014 compared to 2013. “The Chinese market, which has had an incredible rise since 2005, had to slow down,” says Bernard Farges, the head of the CIVB. He cited Beijing’s anti-corruption campaign and increased competition from producers in Australia and New Zealand as the main reasons behind the slowdown.
