China’s wine imports registered notable growth in the first eight months of the year, mainly driven by the restocking of medium- to low-end wines after three years of consecutive declines from 2012 to 2014, according to a recent report released by Chinese think tank Grandview. In addition to restocking, consumer shift from beer and spirits to wine and wine investment also propelled the surge, said Yang Zhengjian, an industry expert. However, the rise in shipments doesn’t necessarily mean that there are depletions in stores—and a number of wine merchants are reporting slow sales in the sluggish Chinese economy.
