The Formula E Championship brings a weekend of battery-powered speed to Hong Kong These pre-race events are sure to get your engine whirring
hat’s fast, loud and surprisingly environmentally friendly? Formula E, the world’s first racing series for electric speedsters. Designed to generate interest in electric cars and promote sustainability, it’s now in its second season and touches down in Hong Kong for the first time this month. The first season, which drew more than 190 million fans to tracks and TV coverage, began in Beijing in September 2014 and ended in London in June last year, with races taking place in 10 cities around the world.
The championship sees nine teams, each with two drivers, going head-to-head in a unique and exciting racing series designed to appeal to a new generation of motorsport fans. A world-class line-up of drivers, including former Formula 1 stars Nick Heidfeld, Bruno Senna (nephew of the late three-time world champion Ayrton Senna), Nicolas Prost (son of four-time world champion Alain Prost) and Nelson Piquet Jr (defending Formula E champion and son of three-time world champion Nelson Piquet), will drive the two-kilometre Central Harbourfront circuit for the Hong Kong title on Sunday October 9.
Fancy witnessing a little more speed? Fans can vote for their favourite driver via the official Formula E website, app and on social media, and the three drivers with the most votes will win a Fanboost of additional electrical energy. There will also be a celebrity race, a supercar parade and an opening ceremony with a lion and dragon parade. The event village on the waterfront will host the temporary Emotion Club, where an enticing line-up of pre-race events (see sidebar for more information) and parties are set to put the pedal firmly to the metal.
