The Holiday Inn Golden Mile was sci-fi-geek heaven when Shirley Hiranand hosted a cocktail party in October to celebrate the marriage of her son Ravi to Alice Barnard, which had taken place in Kent, England, a month earlier. The grand ballroom featured a variety of nods to the shared obsession of the happy couple, from placards bearing Star Wars dialogue such as “May the force be with you” and “I am your father” to figurines of characters from Ghostbusters and the Harry Potter universe. Guests heeded the invitation’s suggestion that they wear something red, adding movement to the red-and-white decor—ravi doing his part in bright red Converse sneakers. There was a particularly long reception line to greet guests, with virtually all members of the Hiranand and Harilela families present.
