From its birth in the chilly cockpits of the 1940s through to Beckham’s Belstaff ’d back via Top Gun, Indiana Jones and the Yeezus Tour, the bomber jacket has held an enduring cool kid appeal. According to Google’s annual Fashion Trend Report, searches for bombers—which were already shooting up in 2015—were up 297 per cent year on year in the UK in 2016 and a whopping 612 per cent in the US. If you haven’t invested already, there really is no longer an excuse. With multiple modern iterations and developments on the midnight blue and sage green of the original military issue Ma1—slinky starred numbers at Valentino, Gucci’s buttery soft hand-painted leather and the more functional shearling versions offered by Prada and Coach are all standouts—there really is a bomber to suit every taste and temperament. Time to look sharp and get in flight mode.
