Book far in ad­vance for this su­per cool San Fran favourite perched on the water­front next to the farm­ers mar­ket. Chef Charles Phan’s Viet­namese menu is a con­tem­po­rary take on Asian classics made with fresh in­gre­di­ents from the mar­ket right out­side. Must-or­der dishes in­clude the or­ganic chicken clay­pot with Thai chilli and fresh ginger, cel­lo­phane noo­dles with Dun­geness crab, and bar­be­cued Wil­lis Ranch pork spare ribs. If the weather’s fine, bag a ta­ble on the seafront ter­race, sip on a killer Bloody Mary and watch the world go by. Cal­i­for­nia’s finest wines and pro­duce are show­cased to per­fec­tion at this Miche­lin­starred restau­rant housed in a re­stored Vic­to­rian house with stained-glass win­dows and an­tique lamps atop ta­bles sheathed in crisp white linen. Chef Jarad Gal­lagher of­fers two tast­ing menus—one sourced en­tirely within the state, which in­cludes dishes such as Sonoma foie gras, Lib­erty Farm duck, and cheesecake made with lo­cal kumquats, and the other sourced from around the globe.
