As an anchor on China Central Television (CCTV), the State broadcaster which is known for its solemn and poker-faced style, Zhu Guangquan stands out for his humor. He was nicknamed “CCTV'S punster” last winter when he broadcast the weather, describing it as being so cold that people regarded any place outside their warm bed as a “remote borderland.” Later he amused audiences by telling them that CCTV would keep going during the Spring Festival. “We'll never rest even if the earth explodes,” he joked. More recently, he has attracted attention for his colorful descriptions of the sweltering summer China has been enduring. He also extends his comic persona to his personal microblog on Sina China. As audiences, especially younger viewers, often complain that CCTV news is too dull, Zhu is popular for his departure from the mainstream. Followers say they admire Zhu's calm and relaxed presence on air, which is harder to achieve than keeping a straight face.
