Layer layer

Revolution (Hong Kong) - - WHAT MAKES US TICK -

Gone are the days of t-shirts and shorts. Sorry, we hate to be the bearers of bad news but it’s true. For some, it’s bidding farewell to the perpetual summer vibes that can even make being at work oddly feel like a holiday while for others, it’s a true godsend – a break from the oppressive heat. As we ease, no doubt at a snail’s pace, into winter, and begin to feel that exciting little nip in the air, designers take a nosedive straight into layer territory. Designers have taken a ‘more is more’ approach this fall, with layers ranging from light to dense, and accessories ranging from fur collars to light scarfs. What Acne Studios (above) and 3.1 Phillip Lim (far left) have in common this season is a link to the beach – the former’s inspiration being “winter beach” of the Scandinavian rocky shorelines, and the latter hailing from the West Coast, bringing a SoCal air to the collection. Lim’s collection is living proof of how he takes run-of-the-mill, everyday pieces and gussies them up. A modern-day cowboy can be seen amidst the slouchy air of California cool. Acne Studios offers a more streamlined approach with exaggerated silhouettes and hints of texture and color strewn into the mix. In both cases, light layers are the name of the game. When it comes to watchmaking, strictly speaking, all watches are layered to some extent – it’s just a question of how much. Seeing as we are dabbling with lighter layers this season, we thought we’d go with the more subtle tiers of Arnold & Son’s DSTB (Dial Side True Beat). The true beat mechanism is the star of the show, with its hands, lever wheels and rose gold-treated true beat seconds bridges seen through a sapphire dial at 11 o’clock. The three-dimensional thread continues on the white lacquered domed subdial at 4 o’clock. Fragrance layering can be divided into two categories: combining different fragrances to create a one-off scent, or creating several layers of the same scent to intensify and prolong it. Though fragrance combination is a favorite of ours, it would definitely take a whole, dedicated article to explain just the basic principles so let’s stick to layering for now. Acqua di Parma’s Colonia Intensa Oud is a rare and unforgettable scent experience whose range allows you to start with a combined hair and body wash before following with a matching deodorant spray and cologne, permitting you to steep in its seductive layers for hours to come.
