Chen Zhong­shi (1942-2016) was a well-known con­tem­po­rary au­thor, and for­mer Deputy Chair­man of the China Writ­ers As­so­ci­a­tion. He started writ­ing prose in 1965 and fin­ished his magnum opus White Deer Plain in 1993, for which he won Mao Dun Lit­er­a­ture Prize in 1997. With over five mil­lion copies sold and dis­trib­uted, White Deer Plain has been se­lected for the col­lege read­ing list and adapted into stage plays and movies.

On De­cem­ber 15, 2006, Chen Zhong­shi placed 13th on the Wealth­i­est Au­thors in China List, for his RMB 4.55 mil­lion in roy­alty in­come.

At 07:40 am on April 29th, 2016, he passed away in a hos­pi­tal in Xi’an.
