Sanmao Memorial Hall
Walking into Sanmao’s Memorial Hall, one is greeted with the welcoming warmhearted smile of Sanmao herself. The centerpiece of the first floor features a wax statue of the writer seated on a bicycle, her long skirt draped over the bicycleframe as she stops for a moment frozen in-time, taking a break from her travels to glance over at the visitor passing through the entrance. At her feet a sign reads “On the Road”, a nod to the writers adventurous life. Behind the figure is a large interactive multi-media projection displaying pictures of Sanmao, as well as the places and people that played a significant role in her life. The walls are decorated with quotes, excerpts of writings and pictures, to reflect upon the writer’s nomadic life, her romantic relationships and her passion to beautify the world. The second floor is a more thematic representation of the Sanmao’s life. One room contains a replica classroom with various writings in chalk on a blackboard, while another room boasts a representation of the Saharan Desert, with a camel poking his head out from one of the walls. Build in 2017, the Memorial Hall is over 160m2.
