The most pow­er­ful for­eign brand in China in 2013, Ken­tucky Fried Chicken (KFC) runs more than 5,100 out­lets across China as of 2017. KFC be­came the first Western fast food com­pany in China af­ter its first out­let opened in Qian­men, Bei­jing, on Novem­ber 20, 1987, at a time when din­ers would ask for chop­sticks af­ter or­der­ing their fried chicken. A for­mer vice-pres­i­dent of Tri­con Global Restau­rants (KFC's for­mer par­ent com­pany) ar­gued that, "be­ing the first ... has con­tin­ued to pro­vide KFC with a sub­stan­tial com­pet­i­tive ad­van­tage." By 1988 the Bei­jing out­let had the high­est vol­ume of sales of any KFC in the world.The chain spe­cial­iz­ing in fried chicken, as well as sell­ing a range of burg­ers, fries, and sal­ads, has adapted and in­no­vated its menu over the years.
