In­ter­est­ingly, Con­fu­cius was fa­mously known for his hos­til­ity to­wards mid­day rest, as man­i­fested in the ‘Gongye Chang’ episode of The Analects of Con­fu­cius. Zai Yu, one of Con­fu­cius’ fa­vorite dis­ci­ples, had the gift of the gab. One day, Con­fu­cius no­ticed that Zai Yu did not show up in his class and so he sent some­one to check out his where­abouts. The stu­dent re­turned to re­port that Zai Yu was sleep­ing like a log in his room. “De­cayed wood can­not be carved,” Con­fu­cius sighed in great dis­ap­point­ment.
