Being Innovative and Open-minded
Occupational gender segregation is caused by multiple social factors. However, in recent years, people have become more tolerant and open-minded, and the barrier between "men's jobs" and "women's jobs" has gradually been collapsing. Many employers have an innovative spirit, and they recruit talented people based on their overall capabilities, not their gender. That is a good phenomenon. It indicates people now have a more rational and objective understanding of gender. Meanwhile, many young women, who have been resolute, courageous and careful at work, have proved they are capable of doing jobs in an effective way. Such employees are popular.
Still Facing Challenge
Traditionally, women are considered to be good at learning the humanities, while men are considered to be good at learning engineering. Accordingly, gender segregation still exists when it comes to admission to some higher-education programs. Women mainly learn the so-called "women's subjects," such as teaching skills and social services. Those subjects are related to women's traditional roles, with low incomes. Men mainly learn "men's subjects," such as engineering and high technology, which are related to high occupational prestige and high incomes. Such gender segregation will directly cause occupational segregation.
Gender equality in employment doesn't mean there is an equal number of women and men in any profession. We should recognize the physiological differences between men and women. The division of labor, based on physiological differences, is reasonable, and it is not gender inequality. However, occupational gender segregation is a form of gender inequality, based on discrimination against women. People should break the gender stereotype that women mainly care for their families and that men mainly earn money to support their families. Schools' teaching materials and media reports should avoid using contents related to that gender stereotype.
