'Excellent Women Netizens' Honored
One hundred women were honored as "Excellent Women Netizens" in China on February 9, 2018. The ceremony was held in a studio of people.com.cn. The purpose of the event was to promote the spirit of Chinese President Xi Jinping's speeches (in recent years) on cultivating excellent Chinese netizens, to boost netizens' positive energy and to build a "pure cyberspace."
The Publicity Department of the All-china Women's Federation (ACWF) and the Social Network Bureau, under the Office of the Central Leading Group for Cyberspace Affairs, in December 2017, implemented the campaign to recognize the 100 "Excellent Women Netizens" in China. The federation and the bureau encouraged Chinese to vote, online, for the excellent netizens.
Xia Jie, Vice-president and Member of the Secretariat of ACWF, congratulated the recipients. Cyberspace experts and representatives of the "Excellent Women Netizens," from different regions of the country, attended the ceremony.
Several of the representatives shared their experiences in using the Internet to serve the people, and they called on netizens to respect others, especially women, when they expressed their ideas online.
Statistics issued by China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC, released in January 2018) indicated China had more than 772 million Internet users, among whom 47.4 percent were women. The rapid development of the Internet in recent years has resulted in the increased participation of Chinese netizens in various online social interaction activities. As a result, many women have become online celebrities and/or opinion leaders.
