Cus­tody for 15 in stu­dent beat­ing

FIF­TEEN peo­ple are in cus­tody in con­nec­tion with the beat­ing of Near East Univer­sity den­tistry stu­dent Nardim Akram Has­san. The in­ci­dent took place last Wed­nes­day at 6.20pm, when about 20 peo­ple sur­rounded and beat the 22-year-old as he was try­ing to get into his car in Gönyeli.

The group were ar­rested on charges in­clud­ing as­sault caus­ing se­ri­ous in­jury, car­ry­ing items to in­tim­i­date and dis­or­der. Po­lice of­fi­cer Hamza Tar­man told Le­fkoşa Dis­trict Court on Wed­nes­day that a döner ke­bab knife and a metal bar had been wielded. Fif­teen sus­pects were bailed on Thurs­day pend­ing trial, while a 16th per­son ar­rested was re­leased with­out charge.
