Custody for 15 in student beating
FIFTEEN people are in custody in connection with the beating of Near East University dentistry student Nardim Akram Hassan. The incident took place last Wednesday at 6.20pm, when about 20 people surrounded and beat the 22-year-old as he was trying to get into his car in Gönyeli.
The group were arrested on charges including assault causing serious injury, carrying items to intimidate and disorder. Police officer Hamza Tarman told Lefkoşa District Court on Wednesday that a döner kebab knife and a metal bar had been wielded. Fifteen suspects were bailed on Thursday pending trial, while a 16th person arrested was released without charge.
