Againsta Casinos hit

THE bright lights resemble Las Vegas. Inside the roulette wheels spin and the blackjack dealer stands ready — but luck is running out for the casinos of North Cyprus.

Casinos play a big part in the country’s economy. Despite its unrecognis­ed status, the TRNC ranks just behind China’s Macau and Vegas itself as the country with the third highest casino turnover per capita in the world.

But that has little to do with the native population. It’s tourists who spend- and spend big- in the thicklycar­peted halls where daylight never intrudes so your stay is truly timeless.

There are no less than 32 casinos in North Cyprus and like hotels and all other places of entertainm­ent, they were forced to shut for three months to combat the possible spread of corona virus. Despite re-opening their doors a month ago- they are losing the numbers game.
