Tourist ar­rivals up 11% in June, out­bound travel drops

Tourist ar­rivals rose 11% in June to 342,221 tourists, com­pared to 308,219 in the same month last year, ac­cord­ing to the sta­tis­ti­cal ser­vice Cy­s­tat an­nounced.

Based on the monthly Pas­sen­ger Sur­vey, an in­crease of 0.6% was recorded in tourist ar­rivals from the United King­dom, from 111,156 in June 2013 to 111,792 in June 2014.

Ar­rivals from Rus­sia also in­creased, up 22.1% from 96,618 to 117,960 this year.

How­ever, a de­crease of 1.9% in ar­rivals was recorded from Swe­den (17,065 in June 2014 com­pared to 17,393 in June 2013), -3.1% from Nor­way (9,733 from 10,049) and - 6.8% from Greece (8,584 from 9,206).

For the four-month pe­riod of Jan­uary-June, tourist ar­rivals were up 6% at 979,838 from 924,135 in the same pe­riod last year.

Mean­while, the num­ber of res­i­dents of Cyprus trav­el­ling abroad dropped 12.4% in June, com­pared to the same month last year.

In all, 100,713 res­i­dents of Cyprus re­turned from a trip abroad in June, com­pared to 114,982 in June 2013.

There was a 27.9% de­crease in trips of res­i­dents to the United King­dom, from 35,829 in June 2013 to 25,835 in June 2014.
