Agri­cul­ture Min­is­ter Ni­cos Kouyialis con­tin­ues to pro­mote the legal claim on hal­loumi and the ef­forts un­der­way for the ap­pli­ca­tion for the pro­tected des­ig­na­tion of ori­gin (PDO), meet­ing in Bu­dapest with EU of­fi­cials where he told del­e­gates that it is un­ac­cept­able and un­eth­i­cal for EU mem­ber states to act against other mem­ber states.

He was speak­ing, on the side­lines of a meet­ing on ge­net­i­cally mod­i­fied or­gan­isms, in ref­er­ence to the ac­tions by some coun­tries that have suc­cumbed to lob­by­ing in favour of de­mands by the Turk­ish Cypri­ots in the case of hal­loumi des­ig­na­tion.

The work­ing break­fast was at­tended by the Am­bas­sadors from Viseg­rad 4 - Czech Repub­lic, Hun­gary, Poland, Slo­vakia - who are be­ing called to ex­ert pres­sure along with the United King­dom, Swe­den and Fin­land to es­tab­lish a pro­duc­tion con­trol mech­a­nism for hal­loumi at the Turk­ish Cypriot Cham­ber of In­dus­try.
