Most suc­cess­ful film fran­chises in his­tory

Fu­ri­ous 7, the lat­est in­stall­ment in the Fast & Fu­ri­ous film se­ries, made head­lines over the past few days af­ter scor­ing the ninth-largest open­ing week­end in U.S. box of­fice his­tory. So far, Fu­ri­ous 7 has proven the high­est­gross­ing film of 2015 and pro­pelled the fran­chise into bil­lion dollar ter­ri­tory. Ac­cord­ing to Box Of­fice Mojo, the Fast and Fu­ri­ous fran­chise has now grossed just un­der $1.2 bln do­mes­ti­cally. How does that com­pare with Hol­ly­wood’s other lead­ing fran­chises?

Over­all, the Marvel Cin­e­matic Uni­verse se­ries of su­per­hero films in­clud­ing Iron Man, The Avengers and Thor: The Dark World, is the most suc­cess­ful movie fran­chise, gross­ing a grand to­tal of $2.95 bln at the North Amer­i­can box of­fice. Harry Pot­ter comes close be­hind with $2.4 bln, while Star Wars rounds off the top three with $1.92 bln. The gross $1.2 bln taken in by the seven Fast & Fu­ri­ous films places the fran­chise four­teenth on the over­all list of the most suc­cess­ful North Amer­i­can film fran­chises. The top 15 is com­pleted by the Hunger Games with $1.17 bln.
