UCy to set up oil & gas re­search cen­tre in Lar­naca

The Univer­sity of Cyprus plans to es­tab­lish a Hy­dro­car­bons Re­search In­sti­tute and a Depart­ment of Chem­i­cal En­gi­neer­ing of Hy­dro­car­bons in Lar­naca, with the aim to sup­port the oil and gas in­dus­try in the eastern Mediter­ranean and to pro­mote ser­vice providers to the oil in­dus­try.

The univer­sity said in an an­nounce­ment that the Sub­ma­rine Ar­chae­ol­ogy Cen­tre and the Oceano­graphic Cen­tre will also move to Lar­naca.

Univer­sity Rec­tor, Pro­fes­sor Con­stanti­nos Christofides and Coun­cil Pres­i­dent Man­thos Mavrom­ma­tis have wel­comed the re­cent an­nounce­ments by Pres­i­dent Ni­cos Anas­tasi­ades for a num­ber of projects in Lar­naca and the Cab­i­net de­ci­sion to ap­prove a univer­sity re­quest to use the state-owned land of the aban­doned leper colony to house the In­sti­tute of Hy­dro­car­bons, the Cen­tre of Sub­ma­rine Ar­chae­ol­ogy, the Oceano­graphic Cen­tre and the Depart­ment of Chem­i­cal En­gi­neer­ing and Hy­dro­car­bons.

Ac­cord­ing to the Rec­tor, this de­ci­sion cre­ates a promis­ing prospect for Lar­naca.
