The world’s most gen­er­ous na­tions

When it comes to the sheer num­ber of peo­ple do­nat­ing money to char­ity, In­dia and the United States are the world’s top two na­tions with 184 and 164 mln peo­ple mak­ing monthly do­na­tions re­spec­tively in 2014. How­ever, in per­cent­age terms, the peo­ple of Myan­mar are the world’s most gen­er­ous, ac­cord­ing to CAF’s World Giv­ing In­dex.

When in­ter­viewed in 2014, 92% of re­spon­dents in Myan­mar said that they do­nated money to char­ity over the pre­vi­ous month, adding up to a grand to­tal of 37 mln peo­ple. Thai­land comes se­cond with 87% of re­spon­dents mak­ing a do­na­tion dur­ing the month prior to the sur­vey. A high pro­por­tion of Ther­avada Bud­dhists prac­tis­ing Sangha Dana in both coun­tries is one of the pri­mary rea­sons for the gen­er­ous do­na­tion rate. (Source: Statista)
