Marfin eyes big­ger Laiki stake, gold at $600

Marfin wants to up its stake in Laiki from a frac­tion be­low 10% to 20% and has asked for cen­tral bank ap­proval, while gold broke through the $600 level for the first time since 1980, ac­cord­ing to the is­sue 668, on April 26, 2006.

Marfin Fi­nan­cial Group is re­ported to have asked the Cen­tral bank of Cyprus for per­mis­sion to raise its stake in Laiki Pop­u­lar Bank from 9.98% to 20%, in an ef­fort to cre­ate a new bank­ing group in co­op­er­a­tion with Eg­na­tia, in which
