Trucks and buses, but not urban transport, came to a halt over a dispute with the government that insists that all vehicles include tachometers as part of the EU harmonisation and safety rules.

Drivers’ unions staged the work stoppage (which they did not call a “strike”) because they said that the government’s plans makes their vehicles illegal and unworthy on roads, while the Justice Minister and MPs refuse to meet them.

Officials from the Civil Aviation department told an inquiry into the deaths of the 121 passengers and crew of the ill-fated Helios flight to Greece that seven incidents concerning problems in the function of the Boeing 737 had been reported from the time of the aircraft’s registration up to the fatal crash.
