Vic Walker (70), an ex-Rhodesian living in KwaZulu-Natal, drove his first Land Rover in 1955. It was a 1954 Series 1, Truck Cab, which belonged to his father’s boss. In 1960, working as an apprentice on the Bulawayo City Council, Vic bought his first Land Rover – a 1958 Series Truck Cab for £250 (in picture). According to Vic, the Landy has done an incredible 836 000 km! In 2006, he replaced the motor with a 1959 2.25L motor, which is running well. “The old lady is still going strong. I have given it to a young mechanic who works for my daughter and he uses it all the time. I’m afraid the Natal chrome has started to attack the firewall and it needs to be stripped down and refurbished.”
