The Discovery Sport’s design is clearly distinctive from the rest of the fleet. Is this the way forward for Land Rover?
There are now three distinct families within the Land Rover brand, namely Range Rover, Discovery and Defender. That’s the brand’s architecture and the backbone of everything we do from now on. As you know, we’re in the process of creating a whole new generation of vehicles. With the Discovery Sport, our aim was to make them less utilitarian in design, and more universally appealing, but without being too generic. In the US for example, research shows that consumers were polarised on the functional design of the Discovery. In coming years, you’ll see a dramatic change in the Discovery line-up. While the Discovery is all about versatility, I also wanted it to be sexy and highly desirable. But from a design aspect, the Discovery Sport is well proportioned, compact and very dramatic. It’s got certain design cues that’ll connect it to the rest of the Discovery family and link back to the overall Land Rover DNA.
