FROM THE DRIVER'S SEAT

Land Rover AFRICA Magazine - - FROM THE DRIVER'S SEAT -

Upon my return from a week-long adventure through Morocco, a friend asked me a peculiar question: “Didn’t you ever feel scared at all?” That got me thinking. To be honest, there were a few nervous moments with Morocco’s secret police, especially in Casablanca. They’re not the friendliest bunch, and we’ve heard harrowing tales of company CEOs detained for weeks because of irregularities with visas and passports. But apart from dealing with grumpy authorities, never once did we feel threatened or unsafe in Morocco, even when exploring the narrow alleys and derbs of the medina by ourselves at night. I recently met Louise Otter, a strongwilled, well-travelled woman, who led an 11-month, 45-country expedition through Africa. During the trip, Louise stayed in the same Radisson Blu hotel in Bamako, Mali, a month before militants killed 20 hostages in a mass shooting there last year. Despite this, Louise travels fear-free and without inhibition. Then it hit me: the real reason we travel is that if we don’t, we give in to our own primal fears and insecurities. It’s the very fear that explodes when fuelled by anger, isolation or poverty. It’s the fear that drives us to retreat to the narrow-minded ‘us-versus-them’ mentality that pompously disregards our common connection with other people. In short, travel broadens the mind, no matter how ‘dangerous’ a destination is. This month, we feature our unique visit to Marrakech in Morocco and find out why the Range Rover is such a popular vehicle there. We feature the five best self-drives through the Kruger National Park and we provide you with more good reasons to be a Landy owner (referring to their Roadside Assist benefit). Also, next month, we bring special tribute to nature’s fairer sex in August/September’s Women’s Month issue. Send us your stories, we’d love to hear (and publish) them.
