In­ter­net users de­cline by 7% in Jan­uary

The num­ber of in­ter­net users de­clined from 36.37 mil­lion to 33.82 mil­lion

The to­tal num­ber of in­ter­net users de­clined by 7% in Jan­uary 2017 com­pared to De­cem­ber 2016, from 36.37 mil­lion cus­tomers in De­cem­ber to 33.82 mil­lion cus­tomers in Jan­uary—a de­crease of ap­prox­i­mately 3 mil­lion cus­tomers—ac­cord­ing to a re­port is­sued by the Min­istry of Com­mu­ni­ca­tions and In­for­ma­tion Tech­nol­ogy.

The re­port sig­naled the de­cline in the num­ber of mo­bile in­ter­net users reach­ing 26.16 mil­lion users in Jan­uary 2017, com­pared to 28.65 mil­lion in De­cem­ber 2016—a de­cline of 8.7% equiv­a­lent to 2.4 mil­lion users.

Ac­cord­ing to the re­port, the num­ber of in­ter­net USB users fell slightly from 3.38 mil­lion users in De­cem­ber 2016 to 3.26 mil­lion users in Jan­uary 2017—a de­cline of about 0.78%.

On the other hand, the num­ber of fixed-line in­ter­net users in­creased from 4.44 mil­lion users in De­cem­ber 2016 to 4.46 mil­lion users in Jan­uary 2017.

The largest num­ber of fixed-line users was in Cairo with 43%, fol­lowed by the Deltaw­ith 29%,Alexan­dria and Ma­trouh with 11%, Upper Egypt with 11%, and the Suez Canal, Si­nai, and Red Sea with 6%.

Voda­fone ac­quired the largest share of new cus­tomers in Jan­uary, ad­ding more than 356,800 clients, boost­ing its client base from 40.2 mil­lion in De­cem­ber 2016 to 40.6 mil­lion in Jan­uary, ac­cord­ing to data from the Min­istry of Com­mu­ni­ca­tion and In­for­ma­tion Tech­nol­ogy.

On the other hand, the num­ber of sub­scribers of Or­ange dropped from 33.8 mil­lion in De­cem­ber to 33.7 mil­lion in Jan­uary,los­ing some 89,400 clients in one month. Eti­salat ob­tained more clients, ris­ing from 23.6 mil­lion clients in De­cem­ber to 23.8 mil­lion by the end of Jan­uary 2017, with 175,000 new sub­scribers.

Ac­cord­ing to the in­di­ca­tors, the sheer num­ber of mo­bile ser­vice sub­scribers in­creased by 442,500 clients in Jan­uary.

The to­tal num­ber of mo­bile ser­vices reached 98.2 mil­lion in Jan­uary, up from 97.7 mil­lion in De­cem­ber 2016.
