Egypt strongly con­demns us­ing chem­i­cal weapons in Syria

Egypt strongly con­demned the use of chem­i­cal weapons in the con­flict in Syria from “any par­ties”, said Egypt’s per­ma­nent del­e­gate to the United Na­tions (UN), Amr Abou El-Ata, state me­dia re­ported.

Abou El-Ata spoke for Egypt be­fore the Se­cu­rity Coun­cil’s ses­sion to dis­cuss the chem­i­cal at­tacks in Syria, on Wed­nes­day. He added that Egypt con­demns all shapes of killing and de­struc­tion.

Egypt specif­i­cally con­demns the ran­dom use of mass de­struc­tion weapons that af­fect in­no­cent civil­ians, Abu El-Ata said. He stressed that Egypt sup­ports the ac­count­abil­ity of in­di­vid­u­als, bod­ies, or au­thor­i­ties that have been in­volved in such “crim­i­nal ac­tions.”

In Novem­ber 2016, Egypt’s Pres­i­dent Ab­del Fat­tah Al-Sisi stressed dur­ing an in­ter­view with Por­tuguese TV that Egypt sup­ports “na­tional arms in Libya and Syria” and con­fronting ter­ror groups. He also called for a po­lit­i­cal so­lu­tion for the Syr­ian cri­sis.

In Oc­to­ber 2016, Egypt’s per­ma­nent del­e­gate to the Se­cu­rity Coun­cil voted for a Rus­sian res­o­lu­tion re­gard­ing Syria, de­spite the re­jec­tion of Egypt’s al­lies in the Arab Gulf.The res­o­lu­tion called for halt­ing all “of­fen­sive ac­tions in Syria”, but ex­cluded the Rus­sian raids.
