A40-year- old driver of Sonaisali appeared at the Nadi Magistrates Court yesterday for alleged rape. The accused is alleged to have raped a 16-year-old girl in Nadi on March 14 during a fishing trip. Aisea Davetawalu, who is charged for one count of rape, appeared before Magistrate Siromi Turaga.

The matter was reported to Nadi Police Station the day after the alleged offence. Police Prosecutor Constable Dinesh Chand objected for bail because of the seriousness of the charge. Mr Chand told the court that the offence is an indictable one and asked the matter to be transferred to the high court. The accused opted for a Legal Aid Commission representative.

Magistrate Turaga remanded the accused and transferred the case to the High Court. Davetawalu will appear at the High Court in Lautoka on April 6 for mention.
