Irresponsible Drivers Need To Be Taken Off Our Roads
Irresponsible, selfi sh and overconfident drivers without concern for others on the roads. That is how we can simply describe those who drink and drive on our roads. They are not only endangering their own lives along with those in their vehicles, but those other innocent people on our roads. Nothing can ever justify drinking and driving and in fact, it should not even be encouraged in the first place. A few minutes of thrill can lead to lives lost, life-long regrets or even life-long disability. Indeed we are lucky in Fiji that the fines and penalities for drink and drive are not so heavy. In our neighbouring countries, fines are so high that no one would even think of consuming alcohol above the approved limit and driving. The other thing we are lucky in Fiji about is that the taxi fares are so cheap and indeed the travelling distances are not so far. So if you do have to go to a party and drink, either organise for someone to pick you up, have a nondrinking person to drive to accompany you or alternatively, just catch a cab home. There is no one really who benefits. You become a hazard on the road. You could end up hitting a pedestrian or even worse, causing a bad accident. Would you be able to live with this guilt? I think not. Therefore, we all need to act more responsibly. The fact the penalties and fines here are quite low, does not mean we take advantage of the situation. Let us not push our authorities to push up the fines to where they are in Australia and New Zealand. It is understandable that many people would not be able to afford, if given such hefty fines as our neighbouring countries. Therefore, it is time to act now. And indeed if you love speed then test your skills in sober conditions at the tracks where Fiji Car Club organises regular race events. That is the place to test your skills and vehicle speed. Remember, a life lost can never be brought back. It is better to not risk it than to live with life-long regrets.
Therefore, we all need to act more responsibly. The fact the penalties and fines here are quite low, does not mean we take advantage of the situation.
