Eternal rest

Fiji Sun - - Comments - Note: Reverend Dr Cliff Bird will be receiving a Pen from Fiji Sun this week.

“Eternal Rest?” The words attributed by the other media (Sunday, March 20) to the pastor who conducted the burial of the young girl who was brutally and inhumanly raped and murdered need some serious unpacking. The words were/are “death was an integral part of life as everyone would eventually die.” That death was/is an integral part of life, is not the issue, and that, everyone would eventually die is also not the issue.

There is no debate about these facts of life. The issue is the cause and manner of death of the young girl - that she was caused to die prematurely through rape and assault.

This IS the issue! Every church in Fiji and every right-thinking person of whatever creed should join in a combined voice to publicly denounce, and to proactively and actively work to eradicate, such evil behaviour and acts.

The statement attributed to the presider at the funeral lends a clear lack of seriousness toward magnitude and evil of the crime committed, and this is indeed very sad!
