Man threat­en­ing to kill wife spared from jail

Port Vila: Supreme Judge, Oliver Sak­sak has sus­pended a 2 years and 6 months im­pris­on­ment sen­tence of a man who pleaded guilty for threat­en­ing to kill his de facto wife ear­lier this year. James Kasso was un­der the in­flu­ence of al­co­hol at that time, had a knife on him when he threat­ened to cut the vic­tim to death.

The act of threats to kill is con­trary to sec­tion 115 of the Pe­nal Code Act CAP 135 and is a se­ri­ous of­fence with a max­i­mum penalty of 15 years. Mr Kasso pleaded guilty to two of the same count. His sen­tence was sus­pended for 3 years dur­ing sen­tenc­ing last week. “If you should com­mit the same of­fence or any other crim­i­nal of­fence for which you would be charged and con­victed, this sus­pended sen­tence will be ac­ti­vated and you will go to prison to serve your prison term,” the Supreme Court Judge cau­tioned Kasso.
