Farmer, 58, Drowns, Vil­lage Mourns Loss

Vil­lagers of Vatutu Vil­lage in Nadi are griev­ing the loss of a 58-year-old man who drowned while at­tempt­ing to cross a flooded river. Farmer Ula­iasi Nawale, who was last seen head­ing to­wards his farm to secure his live­stock, never re­turned home on Mon­day. Po­lice spokesper­son Naina Ragi­gia said the body was dis­cov­ered at the Uci­wai Beach, Nadi at around mid­day yes­ter­day. “The man was re­ported miss­ing at the Nadi Po­lice Sta­tion this morn­ing af­ter which he had been miss­ing from Mon­day (04/04/16) by a fam­ily mem­ber,” she said. The vic­tim’s nephew, Ti­moci Nawale, said his un­cle would be surely missed. “He was a very funny and love­able man in the vil­lage,” he said. “He had gone to get his horse on Mon­day morn­ing which was tied on the other bank of the river. While cross­ing he was swept away by strong cur­rents.” A post mortem ex­am­i­na­tion is ex­pected to be con­ducted soon.
