Ru­ral Fi­jians ap­ply­ing for the Ru­ral Hous­ing As­sis­tance (RHA) Scheme can ex­pect to save costs fol­low­ing a de­ci­sion by Govern­ment to re­duce ap­pli­cants’ one third con­tri­bu­tion. The amend­ment fol­lows a re­duc­tion in build­ing ma­te­ri­als costs at­trib­uted di­rectly to the de­crease of Value Added Tax from 15 per cent to 9 per cent. Min­istry of Ru­ral and Mar­itime De­vel­op­ment and Na­tional Dis­as­ter Man­age­ment per­ma­nent sec­re­tary, Meleti Bain­i­marama said the 1/3 con­tri­bu­tion of the RHA Pro­gramme is based on the cur­rent mar­ket price of build­ing ma­te­ri­als. He said: “The pre­vi­ous mar­ket price for the 24x16 tim­ber frame RHA build­ing was $18,307.19 and ap­pli­cants had to pay a 1/3 con­tri­bu­tion of $6,102.43.” “Due to the re­duc­tion in VAT from 15 per cent to 9 per cent as an­nounced by Govern­ment, the cur­rent or new mar­ket price has de­creased to be­low $18,000 and ac­cord­ingly we have re­duced the 1/3 con­tri­bu­tion to be­low $6,000. “We are urg­ing ru­ral Fi­jians to take ad­van­tage of this change and ben­e­fit from cy­clone re­sis­tant homes”. Mr Bain­i­marama added that the slight vari­a­tion in costs be­tween the di­vi­sions is based on the cur­rent mar­ket price of build­ing ma­te­ri­als at the di­vi­sions.
