Fiji Sun - - Fiji Today - DAUNABUNA FEELS PRIVILEGED TO BE FILLING HIS SHOES JESSICA GOUNDER Edited by Nemani Delaibatiki

Newly appointed Permanent Secretary for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations Salaseini Daunabuna is following in her father’s footsteps. Mrs Daunabuna, 34 is the daughter of a former Permanent Secretary for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations and ex-chairman for the Public Service Commission Josefa Serulagilagi.

She feels privileged to be filling her father’s shoes and is thankful for his advice regarding her new role. “He likes to give me advice which is good and it’s a privilege to take up where things had been created. He adopted the occupational health and safety in terms of establishing that and now it is a full blown programme,” Mrs Daunabuna said. Coming from a family of lawyers Mrs Daunabuna took up a career in law and graduated from the University of the South Pacific Law campus. For the past 10 years she has worked at the Attorney-General’s office till she was appointed to her new post on Tuesday. Mrs Daunabuna has three children. She feels she can achieve anything in life with the support of her husband and family.

“Good family support is the key really and I think for working mothers the first thing you need to know is how good is your family support and if you have good family support and you’re confident of what is required of you then there is nothing stopping you, sky is the limit,” Mrs Daunabuna said. Some of the challenges she would be facing in her new role would be handling issues where workers are being underpaid. “Some of the big issues that were highlighted recently were the issues of the worker not being paid at the correct rate or they are not receiving their pay and what we are trying to do is upskill and getting this matter through court, so that at the end of the day the worker gets what he is entitled to. “Employment creation is the big one, we are trying to upskill and hold on to and we are assisted through the national employment centre,” Mrs Daunabuna said.
