COLONEL WONG PASSES AWAY IN NZ
Former Republic of Fiji Military Forces officer, Colonel Pio Iowane Wong will be laid to rest next Tuesday at his Vatuolalai Village in Nadroga. Colonel Wong passed away last Saturday in New Zealand. He was described by colleague and former Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka as a hard working officer. The late Colonel Wong was also an exceptional rugby player. “He was a very good rugby player and he was in my (RFMF) team which toured Hong Kong and New Zealand. Pio was a good officer and a good member of the community,” Mr Rabuka said. After the military, Colonel Wong stamped his mark in the political arena. He stood for the Soqosoqo ni Duavata ni Lewenivanua (SDL) Party in 2001. He won the Serua/Navosa Open Constituency seat. In 2004 he was appointed Minister for Local Government, Housing, Squatter Settlement, and Environment. The will take place next Monday at Vatuolalai. A requiem mass will take place at the St Peter Chanel Church in Korolevu at 10am on Tuesday.
