Commission backs Oceania Volleyball
The Fiji National Sports Commission has given $60,000 to the organising committee of the 2016 Handy Finance Oceania Volleyball Championship at Laucala Bay, Suva last Friday. Organising committee chairman Nemani Vuniwaqa said the sponsorship has come at the right time and has allowed them to fulfil their initial budget plans for the tournament. “The organising committee is really grateful because the $60,000 has come at the right time; so far we have collected around $120,000 in terms of sponsorship and assistance,” Vuniwaqa said. “The budget we were working on was coming up to $174,000, so if you add the $60,000 it comes up to $180,000 which is more than enough. “We know now that we will achieve what we have intended to do for this year’s championship.
“If you look at the budget, it is not only about hiring the venue; we look at the transportation and coming up with a plan which is connected to the accommodation plan. “The teams that are coming from regional countries have opted to stay in community halls. But these countries look up to Fiji, so the committee agreed that it was best for the interest of the country and in order to minimise security risk, we would rather not put them in community halls but in hotels where security is guaranteed.
“This will guarantee that after this championship they can go back and say a few good words about Fiji.” Meanwhile, Fiji Sports Commission chairman Peter Mazey said they are happy to support volleyball as Government is committed to host international events to move the country forward. “The commission has not given out much funding this year after what has happened with Cyclone Winston,” Mazey said. “But as everybody knows Government has made a very big commitment to the country being open for business and that we are very keen on hosting international events. Other countries taking part are Kiribati, Samoa, Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, Tuvalu and Tonga which will be from May 2-7 at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.
