A man charged with counterfeiting currency notes appeared before Magistrate Cama Tuberi at the Labasa Magistrate Court yesterday. Tefaith Hussein is charged with six counts of counterfeiting currency notes and six counts of uttering counterfeit notes.

Hussein’s lawyer, Amrit Sen, requested Magistrate Tuberi to release his client on bail since the amount was small. However, Northern Divisional Police Prosecutor Inspector Subramani Naidu objected to bail as it was a case of national interest and said it was an indictable offence. The court also heard that Hussein had two related cases where he was charged with one count each of making off without payment. Inspector Naidu requested Magistrate Tuberi to transfer the case to Labasa High Court because of the serious nature of offences committed. Magistrate Tuberi ruled the bail application to be decided at the Labasa High Court while Hussein be further remanded in Police custody. The case has been adjourned for mention on May 5 at Labasa High Court. Shratika Naidu Edited by Filipe Naigulevu
