Tura­galevu to be sen­tenced on May 16

The driver of the ve­hi­cle in­volved in a fa­tal ac­ci­dent in Sam­ab­ula, Suva on Sun­day April 24 ap­peared at the Suva Mag­is­trates Court yes­ter­day. Poni­pate Tura­galevu, who is charged in re­la­tion to the death of two men and in­jur­ing two men, will be sen­tenced on the 16th of this month. Tura­galevu’s lawyer Aca Rayawa had asked the court to con­sider a start­ing point of two years. Mag­is­trate Judge Waileen Ge­orge said this was le­nient given that two lives were lost. Mr Rayawa, in his mit­i­ga­tion sub­mis­sion, high­lighted that Tura­galevu has seven chil­dren and is the sole bread win­ner in the fam­ily. Tura­galevu is cur­rently fac­ing six charges; two counts of dan­ger­ous driv­ing oc­ca­sion­ing death, two for dan­ger­ous driv­ing oc­ca­sion­ing bod­ily harm, driv­ing a mo­tor ve­hi­cle with­out a li­cense and fail­ure to com­ply with the re­quire­ment fol­low­ing an ac­ci­dent.
