Fiji Red Cross Society governance national president Nitin Gandhi said the upholding of the principles of the society was vital in the commemoration of 150th year of humanitarian action. Mr Gandhi was speaking at the Tanoa Skylodge in Nadi at the celebration of World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day attended by over 60 associates on Saturday. “The celebration is about the upholding of these principles, their passion in terms of the fundamental principles of the Red Cross.
“In Fiji the Red Cross society is number one in serving humanitarian needs, has been serving the most vulnerable in the last fifty years plus years and serving the people of Fiji who are in need in terms of disaster response,” Mr Gandhi said. With the global theme as ‘Everywhere for everyone’, branch members had a two-day workshop in line with Saturday’s celebration. This also includes the launch of the Red Cross Week that will culminate with an oratory, video and poster competition across its branches nation-wide. The guest speakers for the event included Fiji Red Cross director general Filipe Nainoca, International Committee of the Red Cross Pacific Regional Cooperation delegate Nima Dadbin and International Federation of Red Cross delegate Ahmad Semi.
The auspicious event is celebrated to commemorate the birthday of Henri Dunant, the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the year 1863 in the Geneva, Switzerland. Meanwhile, the response by Fiji Red Cross in relief work after Tropical Cyclone Winston reached over 50,600 people whereby the 200 staff and volunteers distributed 4000 hygiene kits, 2200 kitchen sets, 3000 jerry cans, 5000 family packs, 4000 blankets and 7000 tarpaulins.
