Fiji Red Cross So­ci­ety gov­er­nance na­tional pres­i­dent Nitin Gandhi said the up­hold­ing of the prin­ci­ples of the so­ci­ety was vi­tal in the com­mem­o­ra­tion of 150th year of hu­man­i­tar­ian ac­tion. Mr Gandhi was speak­ing at the Tanoa Sky­lodge in Nadi at the cel­e­bra­tion of World Red Cross and Red Cres­cent Day at­tended by over 60 as­so­ciates on Satur­day. “The cel­e­bra­tion is about the up­hold­ing of th­ese prin­ci­ples, their pas­sion in terms of the fun­da­men­tal prin­ci­ples of the Red Cross.

“In Fiji the Red Cross so­ci­ety is num­ber one in serv­ing hu­man­i­tar­ian needs, has been serv­ing the most vul­ner­a­ble in the last fifty years plus years and serv­ing the peo­ple of Fiji who are in need in terms of dis­as­ter re­sponse,” Mr Gandhi said. With the global theme as ‘Every­where for every­one’, branch mem­bers had a two-day work­shop in line with Satur­day’s cel­e­bra­tion. This also in­cludes the launch of the Red Cross Week that will cul­mi­nate with an or­a­tory, video and poster com­pe­ti­tion across its branches na­tion-wide. The guest speak­ers for the event in­cluded Fiji Red Cross di­rec­tor gen­eral Filipe Nain­oca, In­ter­na­tional Com­mit­tee of the Red Cross Pa­cific Re­gional Co­op­er­a­tion del­e­gate Nima Dad­bin and In­ter­na­tional Fed­er­a­tion of Red Cross del­e­gate Ah­mad Semi.

The aus­pi­cious event is cel­e­brated to com­mem­o­rate the birth­day of Henri Du­nant, the founder of the In­ter­na­tional Com­mit­tee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the year 1863 in the Geneva, Switzer­land. Mean­while, the re­sponse by Fiji Red Cross in re­lief work af­ter Trop­i­cal Cy­clone Win­ston reached over 50,600 peo­ple whereby the 200 staff and vol­un­teers dis­trib­uted 4000 hy­giene kits, 2200 kitchen sets, 3000 jerry cans, 5000 fam­ily packs, 4000 blan­kets and 7000 tar­pau­lins.
