Nausori International Airport:
AFL has been offered 35 hectares of land for possible bigger runway, new terminal
Airports Fiji Limited has received an offer of 35 hectares of land from Director of Lands for the expansion of Nausori International Airport.
Airports Fiji executive chairman, Faiz Khan, said at this stage, they have not received the land lease but hope to get it finalised soon.
“Once that is done, next year, we will start planning the project for a bigger runway and a new terminal,” he said. Mr Khan added they did not have a budget in line at the moment with the upgrade. The budget would be in line with the design etc for the project.
“The current Nausori terminal is quiet small. It is not feasible for us to upgrade on the existing terminal because of staging issues, and it is easier to build on a Green Field sight on a completely vacant land,” he said. “We have also identified a land where the new terminal will come up. It will be a completely new terminal right next to or a bit further away from the existing terminal.”
Meanwhile, Mr Khan further confirmed Airports Fiji has called for expressions for interest for the Rotuma Airport runaway upgrade. “Couple of weeks from now, we will be taking shortlisted bidders to Rotuma to see what is involved or what is going to be involved in the work over there,” he said. “So Rotuma is also the priority on our agenda in terms of other airports that are present. From next year we will be focussing our priority on Nausori.”
The news of upgrades comes amidst ongoing works on the modernisation of the Nadi International Airport. Mr Khan announced on Friday that part of the brand new departures check-in hall was going to be launched by July-August this year. A fresh set of 3D renderings of the Nadi Airport Terminal Modernisation project was released as well. Once completed, the modern Nadi International Airport is expected to enhance passenger travel experience and strengthen our position as a tourist destination.
So Rotuma is also the priority on our agenda in terms of other airports that are present. From next year we will focus our priority on Nausori. Faiz Khan Airports Fiji Executive Chairman
