Hardware retailer RC Manubhai has gone the extra mile to accommodate victims of TC Winston by providing food, drinks and cash-back to recipients of the Government funded Help for Home initiative. RC Manubhai national operations manager Oscar De Mel said this was to assist the recipients who have lost their homes during Tropical Cyclone Winston on February 20.

“The friendly hospitality is our main concern. They come from far away and they are tired and they need some comfort so we have provided them with some food, snacks, drinks and yaqona to make them comfortable while with us,” Mr De Mel said. “We also have decided to give cash back. This is because they are coming from far away so this is to help them with bus fares, food and accommodation so at least when they are spending $7000 they are getting $165.” The hardware giant will give cash-back of $165, $110 and $55 to recipients of $7000, $3000 and $1500 respectively to Help for Homes recipients who shop at their outlets.

“This is at least good enough to help them,” he said. The company serves up to 350 recipients every week. More than 100 people from cyclone ravaged villages around Fiji crowded the company’s main store in Raiwai, Suva, yesterday to collect their quotations and purchase building materials for their homes under the initiative.

Forty-nine-year-old diver, Sepesa Mainayau was among those who crowded the hardware at Raiwai to purchase his building materials. Mr Mainayau’s three-bedroom concrete home was completely destroyed when TC Winston swept through his village in Cikobia in Lau three months ago. “I just received my E-card on Monday with $7000 and I have come here to buy my materials. I am very happy and thankful to the Government for enabling us to put a roof back on our family’s heads and move on with life through this initiative,” Mr Mainayau said.
