Avigil night for those suffering and those who have lost their lives from HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) and AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) will be hosted tomorrow at the Western Division Hub Centre in Lautoka.

Ministry of Health peer navigator of the Western Division Apolosi Lasei said the night was dedicated to the mothers this year. “The night is dedicated to those mothers and families who have lost their mothers from HIV and AIDS either recently or in the past and the theme is Empower,” Mr Lasei said. He said this event would greatly help raise awareness on HIV/AIDS and to eliminate the stigma attached to it. “We want to create awareness on the importance of people being careful in regards to sexual intercourse, breast feeding and in regard to HIV and AIDS,” Mr Lasei said. “We have close to 700 people in Fiji who have been diagnosed with HIV and AIDS and this number is rapidly growing. “One of the major points we would like to raise awareness to the public that HIV and AIDS is not contracted through a handshake, through a hug or even through a normal kiss.” The event will also have a moment of silence and lighting of candles to remember loved ones who have lost their lives because of HIV and AIDS. Mr Lasei said members of the public should wear red ribbons to show their support for those who were still battling with the virus at this stage.
