Indian national’s plea deferred
An Indian national charged with one count of conspiracy to defraud to influence a public official has had his plea deferred to next Tuesday. Anil Kumar appeared yesterday before Magistrate Waleen George at the Suva Magistrates Court. Kumar is alleged to have conspired with another person with the intention of dishonestly influencing Fijian immigration officers in the exercise of their duties in the issuance of a passport. The defence yesterday told the court that Kumar had been remanded for 10 months without being charged. This was confirmed to the court by the State and reasoned that Kumar had been remanded without being charged as per the directive from the Director of Immigration. To this, Magistrate George said this would be considered if Kumar would be convicted of the offence and sentenced. Kumar has been further remanded in custody to await his plea date.
