Ka­davu farmer gets 13 years in jail

A48-year-old farmer of Ka­davu has been sen­tenced to 13 years im­pris­on­ment by the High Court in Suva for un­law­ful cul­ti­va­tion of 438 plants of il­licit drugs in his farm. Joji Vo­ra­vora pleaded guilty to the of­fence. The of­fence came to light af­ter a Po­lice team raided two farms that be­longed to Vo­ra­vora on Jan­uary 16, last year.

Jus­tice Salesi Temo high­lighted the ag­gra­vat­ing fac­tor, stat­ing the amount of the il­licit drugs was huge, weigh­ing 33.7 kilo­grams.

Vo­ra­vora, a first of­fender, was re­manded for more than a year since the raid. Jus­tice Temo or­dered that the drugs be de­stroyed. The farmer will serve a non-pa­role pe­riod of 11 years in jail.

The of­fence came to light af­ter a Po­lice team raided two farms that be­longed to Vo­ra­vora on the 16th of Jan­uary, last year.
