FIRE ALLEGEDLY DELIBERATELY LIT

Fiji Sun - - Election Countdown 2018 - Charles Chambers

A fire that has been ongoing at the Vunato rubbish dump in Lautoka since last Friday was allegedly deliberately lit. Lautoka City Council chief executive Jone Nakauvadra has confirmed that the smoke billowing out from the dump was not hazardous as this was dried wood. “The pile of timber and leaves was from 6000 loads of tree branches and leaves gathered after Cyclone Winston,” Mr Nakauvadra said. “Someone burnt the debris but we have managed to cut a fire break around the burning wood.” Mr Nakauvadra said the National Fire Authority trucks could not access the area and council workers had resorted to dousing the fire with water from a nearby creek. “The smoke is not hazardous and this could be told by the white colour and there is no smell.”

He said they carried out all efforts to extinguish the fire.
