Aussie Bowlers Win Pairs In Nadi
Australian bowlers Graeme Kath and Steven Rice took out the 9th Fiji Airways Sunny West Bowling Carnival 2016 Pairs event at the Nadi Sports Club on Wednesday. They beat Leslie McLinden and Tony Marumaru of New Zealand 19-12 in the final.Kath and Rice first participated when the event started in 2008
“It is great to come every year and to compete with bowling friends from New Zealand and Fiji as well. It is the camaraderie which brings us together but competition is tough as well,” Kath said. In the semifinal McLinden and Marumaru beat Stephan Oregan and Troy Shefford 16-9 while Kath and Rice beat Mohan Lal/ Munesh Kumar 16-8. Kath and Rice were also instrumental in winning the Fours competition teaming with Lautoka’s Rick Eyre and Lema Matailevu beating the team of Jan Oregan, Cameron Laird, Stephen Oregan and Troy Stafford.
Kushal Pillay, Rajnesh Prasad, Santokh Singh and Arun Kumar settled for third spot while in fourth was the team of Shorab Khan, David Aitcheson, Ratish Lal and Semesa Naiseruvatu. Plate champions were Raymond Singh, Iliaz Khan, Bobby Prasad and Abdul Khalim who beat team of Jona Koroitamana, Eseroma Taubale, Waisea Turaga and Phil Taylor. Tournament chairman Mohammed Shorab Khan said over 80 bowlers including Australian, New Zealand and local bowlers participated. “The competition is growing bigger because of the weather in the West, facilities available, sponsorship and the national airline and the hotels involvement the event,” he said. Khan thanked the various sponsor for the event- Gold sponsor were Fiji Airways, Silver sponsors are Fiji Gas, Smuggler’s Cove, Tanoa Hotel and supported by bronze sponsors - Jack’s of Fiji, Coca Cola, Pacific Destinations, FIJI Water, Oceanic Beauty and Message, Captain Cook Cruises, Nadi Sports and Social Club. Fiji Airways manager public relations/ communications Shane Hussein said the organisers have done an excellent job in running the tournament since 2008. “At Fiji Airways we are delighted to be part of this event and this is the ninth year of the competition and this shows the popularity of the tournament,” he said.
