The 2016 Island Chill Suva Marathon was launched at the Holiday Inn in Suva yesterday. Hosted by the Suva Marathon Club, the event on July 23 will consist of the Full marathon (42.2km), Half marathon (21.1km), Corporate marathon (10.55km each-4 in a team) and also a Fun Run (8km). Suva Marathon Club vice-chairman Sandeep Narayan said the event has grown since it started in 2014 and they were aiming to reach 1000 participants this year with two goals in mind. “We hope to reach our target of 1000 participants in 2016 and possibly more,” Narayan said. “We also want to accomplish two main goals; to promote healthier lifestyle in our country which is plagued by a death rate of 70 per cent caused by Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs). Secondly to promote Suva City as a destination for world class marathon events. “The Suva Marathon Club will continue to try to achieve its goal and strive to become better every year. “We invite everyone in our community and sponsors to continue supporting and participating because we are an event which caters to international runners, locals, seniors, people with special needs and everyone. “The best thing about the marathon is that anyone can run and anyone can participate.” There will be warm-up runs leading up to the Suva Marathon with 5km and 10km timed trials on June 4, June 18 and July 2. Meanwhile, sponsors Island Chill financial controller Asitha Sunnadeniya is pleased with the partnership with the Suva Marathon Club that they have agreed to sponsor next year’s event as well. “This is the second consecutive year that Island Chill has confirmed its partnership with Suva Marathon Club as the exclusive bottle water sponsors,” Sunnadeniya said.
