1000 run­ners on July 23: Narayan

The 2016 Is­land Chill Suva Marathon was launched at the Hol­i­day Inn in Suva yes­ter­day. Hosted by the Suva Marathon Club, the event on July 23 will con­sist of the Full marathon (42.2km), Half marathon (21.1km), Cor­po­rate marathon (10.55km each-4 in a team) and also a Fun Run (8km). Suva Marathon Club vice-chair­man San­deep Narayan said the event has grown since it started in 2014 and they were aim­ing to reach 1000 par­tic­i­pants this year with two goals in mind. “We hope to reach our tar­get of 1000 par­tic­i­pants in 2016 and pos­si­bly more,” Narayan said. “We also want to ac­com­plish two main goals; to pro­mote health­ier life­style in our coun­try which is plagued by a death rate of 70 per cent caused by Non Com­mu­ni­ca­ble Dis­eases (NCDs). Se­condly to pro­mote Suva City as a des­ti­na­tion for world class marathon events. “The Suva Marathon Club will con­tinue to try to achieve its goal and strive to be­come bet­ter ev­ery year. “We in­vite ev­ery­one in our com­mu­nity and spon­sors to con­tinue sup­port­ing and par­tic­i­pat­ing be­cause we are an event which caters to in­ter­na­tional run­ners, lo­cals, se­niors, peo­ple with spe­cial needs and ev­ery­one. “The best thing about the marathon is that any­one can run and any­one can par­tic­i­pate.” There will be warm-up runs lead­ing up to the Suva Marathon with 5km and 10km timed tri­als on June 4, June 18 and July 2. Mean­while, spon­sors Is­land Chill fi­nan­cial con­troller Asitha Sun­nadeniya is pleased with the part­ner­ship with the Suva Marathon Club that they have agreed to spon­sor next year’s event as well. “This is the sec­ond con­sec­u­tive year that Is­land Chill has con­firmed its part­ner­ship with Suva Marathon Club as the ex­clu­sive bot­tle wa­ter spon­sors,” Sun­nadeniya said.

“Is­land Chill is ex­cited to be the ma­jor spon­sors and we are look­ing for­ward to a fruit­ful part­ner­ship. “We truly see the value in be­ing as­so­ci­ated with such an im­por­tant event which has al­lowed the peo­ple of Fiji to be ac­tively in­volved in ex­er­cises and also an op­por­tu­nity to com­pete with in­ter­na­tional par­tic­i­pants.”

Prizes will be awarded to the first, sec­ond and third place win­ners in each cat­e­gory, all full marathon fin­ish­ers will get a medal, lucky dip prizes will be drawn through­out the day and there will also be a best dressed award.
