Death driver sentenced to three years 11 months imprisonment
Aman charged for dangerous driving causing deaths was sentenced to three years and eleven months imprisonment. Ponipate Turagalevu was sentenced yesterday by Magistrate Waleen George in the Suva Magistrate’s Court. 21-year-old Kitione Tukana and 18-year-old Epeli Duaibe died from the accident on April 24. The car Turagalevu was driving had sped off Suva’s Ratu Mara Road and plunged off a cliff. Turagalevu had been charged with six counts which are dangerous driving occasioning death (2), dangerous driving occasioning bodily harm (2), driving motor vehicle without a driver’s licence and failure to comply with the requirements following the accident. Turagalevu admitted to speeding and falling off to sleep while driving. At the time of the accident he had fled the scene and had only surrendered after his name and picture were released on social media and Police were looking for him. Tukana’s younger brother Eliki, cousin Epeli and another passenger known as Atu were all admitted at the Colonial War Memorial hospital after the accident. Tukana and Epeli did not survive from the injuries sustained during the accident while Eliki and Atu have been discharged from hospital. Turagalevu has to serve a mandatory three years and five months before he can apply for parole.
