Death driver sen­tenced to three years 11 months im­pris­on­ment

Aman charged for dan­ger­ous driv­ing caus­ing deaths was sen­tenced to three years and eleven months im­pris­on­ment. Poni­pate Tura­galevu was sen­tenced yes­ter­day by Mag­is­trate Waleen Ge­orge in the Suva Mag­is­trate’s Court. 21-year-old Ki­tione Tukana and 18-year-old Epeli Duaibe died from the ac­ci­dent on April 24. The car Tura­galevu was driv­ing had sped off Suva’s Ratu Mara Road and plunged off a cliff. Tura­galevu had been charged with six counts which are dan­ger­ous driv­ing oc­ca­sion­ing death (2), dan­ger­ous driv­ing oc­ca­sion­ing bod­ily harm (2), driv­ing mo­tor ve­hi­cle with­out a driver’s li­cence and fail­ure to com­ply with the re­quire­ments fol­low­ing the ac­ci­dent. Tura­galevu ad­mit­ted to speed­ing and fall­ing off to sleep while driv­ing. At the time of the ac­ci­dent he had fled the scene and had only sur­ren­dered after his name and pic­ture were re­leased on so­cial me­dia and Po­lice were look­ing for him. Tukana’s younger brother Eliki, cousin Epeli and an­other pas­sen­ger known as Atu were all ad­mit­ted at the Colo­nial War Memo­rial hos­pi­tal after the ac­ci­dent. Tukana and Epeli did not sur­vive from the in­juries sus­tained dur­ing the ac­ci­dent while Eliki and Atu have been dis­charged from hos­pi­tal. Tura­galevu has to serve a manda­tory three years and five months be­fore he can ap­ply for pa­role.
