A35-year-old labourer appeared at the Nadi Magistrate’s Court yesterday charged with one count of arson. Kitione Lave Lotawa appeared before Magistrate Serumi Turaga. The court heard that the accused allegedly set a fire at his neighbour’s house on May 26 at Navakai in Nadi. Magistrate Turaga asked Lotawa if he understood the count he was being charged with. He said he understood. The accused pleaded not guilty and had opted for Legal Aid Commission representation. Sergeant Peceli Heritage, who represented the Police prosecution, asked the court to decline bail due to the seriousness of the offence. Lotawa’s Legal Aid lawyer said his client had applied for bail on the grounds that he denied the allegations against him. Magistrate Turaga said it was an indictable offence and he transferred the matter to the High Court. Magistrate Turaga remanded the accused, who will be called in High Court in Lautoka on June 8 for mention.
